How to score it
Assess the patient's ability to walk 50 feet and make two 90-degree turns, starting from standing. The turns may occur at any point during the walk, in the same or different directions, and may be made using an assistive device (e.g., cane). Score what the patient usually does during the assessment period — not best effort, not worst.
The common error
Coding 88 (not attempted due to medical condition/safety) when the patient's inability predates their current illness or injury — 88 is for a patient who was completing the activity before a new condition (e.g., a recent stroke) but can't now. If the patient couldn't walk 50 feet with turns even before the current illness/injury, use 09 (Not applicable) instead.
