How to score it
Assess ability to walk 10 feet on a flat surface. Score what the patient usually does during the assessment period — not best effort, not worst. If patient is bedfast or chairfast and cannot attempt walking, use codes 88 or 09. See Guidance Manual Ch. 4 GG section for full rubric.
The common error
Using code 88 (not attempted due to safety) when the patient could walk with supervision — '88' is for patients where attempting the activity would create a genuine safety risk, not simply for patients who need assistance.
