How to score it

Assess the patient's ability to transfer between any two sitting surfaces (bed-to-chair, chair-to-chair, etc.), ideally in a setting where more than a few steps aren't needed to complete it. If a mechanical lift is used and two helpers are required, code 01, Dependent, even if the patient assists with part of the transfer. This item is separate from GG0170B (Sit to lying) and GG0170C (Lying to sitting on side of bed) — do not fold those activities into this score. See Guidance Manual Ch. 3 GG item-by-item tips for full scoring rubric.

The common error

Rolling the sit-to-lying or lying-to-sitting bed-mobility activities into this transfer score — CMS keeps GG0170B and GG0170C as separate items from GG0170E, Chair/bed-to-chair transfer.
