How to score it
Assess the patient's ability to go up and down four steps, with or without a rail. At SOC/ROC and Discharge, a not-attempted code (07/09/10/88) here skips ahead to GG0170P, Picking up object, so GG0170O isn't separately assessed for that patient; GG0170O and P aren't part of the Follow-up form at all, regardless of this item's code. See Guidance Manual Ch. 3 GG item-by-item tips for full scoring rubric.
The common error
Assuming a patient who uses a stair railing can't be coded 06, Independent — the item explicitly covers going up and down 'with or without a rail,' so railing use alone doesn't imply assistance.
