How to score it
Starting from a standing position, assess the patient's ability to walk at least 10 feet. As with all the GG0170 walking activities (I, J, K, L), use of an assistive device does not automatically lower the code, but a sitting rest break during the attempt means the activity is considered not completed. If performance here is coded 07, 09, 10, or 88, the assessment skips ahead to GG0170M, 1 step (curb), without separately assessing the remaining walking-distance items (GG0170J, and GG0170K/L where applicable to that timepoint) for that patient. The common error
Coding 09, Not applicable, for any patient whose primary mode of mobility is a wheelchair — CMS requires that 09 reflect that the patient also did not walk prior to the current illness, exacerbation, or injury, not merely that they don't routinely walk now.
