How to score it
Assess the patient's ability to put on and take off socks, shoes, or other footwear appropriate for safe mobility, including fasteners. Any item that covers all or part of the foot — including an ankle-foot orthosis (AFO), compression stockings, or an orthopedic walking boot — counts as footwear for this item, even if it extends up the leg. For a patient with bilateral lower-extremity amputation, code 88 if the activity was performed before the current illness/injury but isn't completed now, or 09 if it wasn't performed before either. See Guidance Manual Ch. 3 GG item-by-item tips for full scoring rubric.
The common error
Double-counting a device like an AFO or compression stocking under both GG0130G (Lower Body Dressing) and GG0130H — CMS assigns any item covering all or part of the foot to footwear (H) only, not to lower body dressing, even when it extends up the leg.
