How to score it
Ask directly whether the patient wants or needs an interpreter to communicate with a doctor or health care staff — independent of preferred language (A1110A). If coding 1 (Yes), make sure preferred language is indicated. Dash is not a valid response for this item.
The common error
Coding 9 (Unable to determine) when a proxy or the medical record could have answered instead — 9 is reserved for when no source at all can determine the need.
